PIE on the Tide

Once the winds shifted, the crew of 360 North relaunched the PIE on the Tide off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Big thanks to Captain Travis and crew!

The boat started heading south, but took a turn east. After exactly 24 hours, the miniboat found its way into North Cove and landed.

The tide must have pushed the boat back out, and she traveled up North Bay into Little Doting Cove after 4 hours.

We waited a couple days to make sure the boat was not going to refloat itself again before contacting our local friends out of Harbor Breton.

It didn’t move, so on July 29 we contacted our friend Brittany Jay, DFO Fishery Officer who recovered BHS Roweboat a few years ago, and asked for help. She immediately replied and said they’d venture out the next day to scope things out!

Another successful retrieval!

After getting the emails last night, I was able to get together a crew to embark on the retrieval of the P.I.E on the Tide.

We departed Milltown, Newfoundland at 0930, where we sailed out towards Little Dove Cove. It was foggy, but the seas conditions were fair offering us good sailing.

At 1024 we spotted P.I.E on the Tide nestled in the rocks in the back of the cove, at the base of a steep embankment. It was perfectly placed, just waiting for us.

By 1035, we had the Miniboat aboard and were all safely back in our boat as well.

We sailed back to Milltown, with the Miniboat safely tucked away and secured, with the Pilot whales even making an appearance for us!

My team today consisted of:

• River Guardian Travis Hollett, my wonderful captain for the day.
• River Guardian Mark Reardon.
• River Guardian Jacob Glavine.
• River Guardian Zachary Anstey.

For now, the P.I.E on the Tide is safely secured amongst our own patrol vessel fleet, and it looks mighty good alongside them, the students did a wonderful job with their handywork.

Next Steps?

After talking with Ms. Bridget back in Portland Maine, we thought it might be good to keep the boat in Harbor Breton and introduce it to the students there when the next school year starts in a month or so. We can’t wait for them to see what is inside, and talk about the shared connections like island living…

October Update:

On October 28th, Brittany Jay, DFO Fishery Officer and a team member delivered M/B P.I.E On the Tide to St. Joseph’s Elementary School for students in Ms. Oldford’s classroom to engage in the program in Harbor Breton, Newfoundland. They presented about the miniboat itself and the work that they do as maritime professionals.

Student’s were presented the miniboat and were able to ask DFO officers (who rescued the boat) and the finder (a parent of one of the students), all kinds of curious questions before opening the cargo hold. Inside they found letters and memorabilia, in addition to the unique Flat Stanley characters representing each student participating in the program at Peaks Island Elementary in Maine, USA!

But the excitement doesn’t end there! Each student got a chance to sign P.I.E and have plans to zoom with their new friends in America very soon.

November Update:

On November 7th, elementary students from St. Joseph’s in Harbor Breton and Peaks Island Elementary School in Maine were able to meet over Zoom!

The miniboat P.I.E on the Tide sparked curiosity between the classrooms and everyone had a blast getting the chance to eagerly ask all sorts of questions, such as:
“Why did you make the miniboat?”
“How’d you come up with the name ‘P.I.E On the Tide” for the boat?”
“What did you all think when the boat came to you over there [in Canada]?”
“What’s your favorite thing about your school and where you live?”
“Why did you make Flat Stanley’s?”
“What do your shirts represent?”
“What’s your school’s mascot?”
“What is the boat made of?”
“Do you know 6 7?”

They will continue to connect into the new year and are already pairing up buddies for pen pals.

Both schools in Peaks Island, Maine, USA and Harbour Breton, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada continue to integrate ocean education and the miniboat project into their classrooms as relaunch plans are underway for P.I.E On the Tide.

On May 20, 2026 curiosity and excitement joined together as students reconnected on Zoom, since their last chat in November 2025! They shared updates, asked questions, and were able to meet their relaunch deployers: Shila and Adam from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

The St. Joseph’s crew also made Flat Stanleys, just like the ones they received in the cargo hold that the Peaks Island crew made. Every student that has participated in this miniboat project is now represented as a Flat Stanley and has been added to the cargo hold before Voyage 4 sets out to sea.

On May 22, 2026 St. Joseph’s crew members brought their miniboat down to the docks and completed a shakedown cruise or “fake launch” as part of prep for her relaunch soon. P.I.E On the Tide was floated in Harbour Breton with all systems a-go!

On May 26, 2026 DFO Officer Chris Billard brought P.I.E On the Tide to Clarenville, a half-way point, as the miniboat made its way across the province to her deployers in St. John’s.

On May 27, 2026 another DFO officer met Chris in Clarenville and brought her to St. John’s, where their deployer will depart from at the beginning of June. Special thanks to all the DFO officers who have helped make this happen.

On June 1, 2026 Shila brought P.I.E to Upper Gullies Elementary for the grade 2 to learn about miniboats, along with World Ocean Day and species at risk in their area. There were 54 students engaged and each class signed a Flat Stanley of their own. The teachers were also able to sign the boat on behalf of their school. The week prior, Shila introduced P.I.E to a Girl Guides Group as well!

Since being in St. John’s, DFO officers have ensured the vessel is ready for deployment by sealing the cargo hold.

Thanks to Spartan Industrial Marine store (Stephanie and Kimberley in particular) in Paradise, NL for their help finding sealant for the cargo hold and for providing important line that will keep the sail lashed down during her next voyage!

On June 4, 2026 P.I.E on the Tide was brought aboard the CCGS Leonard J Cowley, a fishery patrol vessel. P.I.E will be deployed once they get past the Grand Banks (off the southeastern coast of Newfoundland, Canada).

The CCGS Leonard J. Cowley, a Canadian patrol vessel based out of St. Johns, NL, Canada is tasked with patrolling NAFO and monitoring fishing activities for compliance. The crew, while out on patrol, relaunched the M/B PIE on the Tide off the shelf break near the Grand Banks. Many thanks to everyone who made this possible!
