• Naming "The Perry"

  The reason behind the boat name: “We are the Air Allies from Anderson W. Clark Magnet High School. We are a part of the Environmental GIS program at our school. GIS is There are several reasons why the Air Allies mini boat is named The Perry.

  Reason number one being that the first person to launch a diplomatic expedition to Japan was U.S. naval officer Matthew C. Perry in 1853-54. The end goal for our boat was to go to Japan, hence we dedicated our mini boat to Matthew Perry.

  Another reason why the mini boat was named The Perry was because of Steve Perry, the leader singer of the classic rock band Journey. We decided that this aspect was also fitting because the boat is going on a journey and also making it was a journey.”

• June 10, 2019 - Delivered to the E/V Nautilus

  Ms. Evans-Bye (shown in the picture on the right), the lead educator for The Perry, made final arrangements with the students during their last days of school and hand delivered the miniboat after a 7+ hour drive north to Vallejo where the E/V Nautilus was docked. Some last minute securing of the air temperature sensor (in the picture to the left), and she was ready!

  

  Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus is an efficient 64-meter exploration vessel with berthing for 17 permanent crew members in addition to 31 berths for members of the rotating Corps of Exploration. The ship is equipped with a multibeam echosounder and two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), Hercules and Argus. As part of the Ocean Exploration Trust’s effort to share expeditions with students, public audiences, and colleagues, we utilize telepresence technology to stream live video from the ROVs and various locations aboard the ship in real time to the Nautilus Live website. • June 26, 2019: Deployed off the E/V Nautilus

  The Perry was deployed on the E/V Nautilus‘ 2019 Expedition during the Palmyra Atoll, Kingman Reef, and Jarvis Island Expedition. Thanks so much to everyone at the Ocean Exploration Trust and the whole crew who helped the students with this deployment!

  The Perry miniboat was successfully launched off the E/V Nautilus on June 26, 2019 at UTC 23:36:14, Hawaii local time 13:36.  The Nautilus was on station at E -159.89745508 and N 12.19160182.

  We last heard from The Perry on July 10, 2019 when she sent her last GPS position.

  VOYAGE STATS

  The miniboat The Perry sailed for 14 days, traveling a total distance of at least 1,329 km (717 nm). A straight line from start to finish is 1,292 km (692 nm). This miniboat also had a sensor package that recorded air and water temperature for 13 days!
