Tidestrider
Columbia River Maritime Museum and Jewell School
Updates:
1st Voyage
S/V Tidestrider is a miniboat assembled and artistically envisioned by Mrs. McBane’s 5th Grade class at Jewell School in Jewell, Oregon.
We began the building and weighing process in January 2024. We designed the sail, installed the sensors, oriented ourselves with the compass, located landmasses with Latitude and Longitude, and created a stick chart to mark small islands in a large ocean like ancient Polynesian navigators did.
March 22, 2024 – We invited our family and friends to the Christening ceremony and shakedown cruise March 22nd at Columbia River Maritime Museum.
Update from the crew: Our deployer is the crew of the NYK RORO vessel Plumeria Leader, a large cargo ship that transports cars from the manufacturer to dealerships in ports around the world. Tidestrider will come aboard on March 28th to be deployed in early April.
March 31, 2024 – The miniboat was delivered to the docks and boarded on the NYK M/V Pyxis Leader
April 13, 2024 – The miniboat was launched! We received the following message from Captain Haque:
K’ly note, we have safely deployed the miniboat today. Pls note below info & attached pics.
Time/Date: 13th Apr’24, 0545 UTC
Position: 39 32.6N 164 54.0 E
Cloudy sky, mostly overcast, slight sea condition at the time of deployment.
We have not been very lucky during this voyage to have any better weather.
Thanks & Best Regards,
Capt. Md. Wahidul Haque
Master / Pyxis Leader
Ocean Science Data
This miniboat also has sensors installed to collect more information about the ocean (only the last 7 days of data will show here):
The sensor data started to fail around April 20. More research is needed to better understand why this may have happened.
