  The Scarborough Sailor has two GPS systems onboard. The location reports from both units will show on the map at the top of this page here (which updates hourly with new positions if available).

  Here below is where you can see the data reporting from the second GPS which is connected to a custom sensor package. In addition to reporting location with a secondary GPS tracker, this system is also collecting air temperature, water temperature, and orientation of the boat.

  Please note that the map below will only the last 7 days of data and may include invalid points and data. If you are interested in looking at the data in a different format from the whole voyage, contact us.

• Fall 2022 - Upgrades at Falmouth High School

  Scarborough Sailor is one of 3 miniboats getting an upgraded cargo hold and to be relaunched in Cape Cod Bay to study cold-stunned sea turtles in collaboration with Falmouth High School.

• February 8, 2023 - Students present at FEF event

  February 8, 2023

  The students presented about their project to the Falmouth Education Fund’s in Action Showcase, which featuring a range of current projects on February 8. For those who missed it, here is a link to the event: FEF Showcase (miniboat presentation starts at 34:40)

  

• March 10, 2023 - Relaunched in Cape Cod Bay

  The Scarborough Sailor was relaunched by the US Coast Guard on March 10, 2023. This was the day before the Falmouth High School students were set to present about their project at the Annual Falmouth STEAM Fair on Saturday.

  The miniboat traveled overnight to Plymouth, MA, landing early on March 11, 2023. Lead educator on the relaunch project, Cheryl Milliken, went to recover the boat in the afternoon after the students presented about this very project at the Falmouth STEAM Fair, but the tide was too high and waves too rough.

  

  The next morning, March 12, two phone calls were made to Educational Passages from people who found the boat on Plymouth Long Beach. The messages were relayed to Cheryl who called them back.

  A little after 11:00 am local time, Cheryl had met up with Nicole Young who found the boat while walking the beach, and recovered what was left of the boat. Unfortunately the sail, mast, keel, and cargo hatch were all missing due to the tide change and rough weather on the sea wall. Nicole said she’d keep an eye out for these components as she frequently walks the beach to clean it up. Thanks, Nicole!

  

  A student drifter was also launched at the same time as the miniboat, but stayed out to sea a little longer. It was recovered by Jim Manning on March 14. You can see the track here.
