What a month it has been! January had boatloads of new and exciting updates we wanted to share with you. 

Read on to see details of the first miniboat launches and recoveries of 2025, and an exciting new publication that is now available!

TRAFFIC REPORTS AND EXCITING UPDATES

⛵ - M/B GREYHOUND 5 and M/B WOLVERINE have officially set sail, marking our first launches of the year! 
  • Gaston Elementary in OR (proud builders of miniboat GREYHOUND 5) and Wallace Elementary in WA (proud builders of their miniboat WOLVERINE) with the Columbia River Maritime Museum saw their vessels co-launched off the coast of Japan on January 25. Big shoutout to Captain Zapanta and crew of the NYK Pluto Leader! 
  • Will these miniboats travel together? What are your predictions?

🤓 - Our scientific article All Aboard! Providing Shipboard Technical Skills While Building Capacity in Ocean Observations was published in a special issue of Oceanography!
  • As part of a United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development initiative, we collaborated with POGO (Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean), Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the University of Galway and the Nippon Foundation to provide shipboard technical skills while building capacity in ocean observations. 🔥 - M/B FLAMES UNITE was recovered in the Philippines after not tracking for 2 years! 
  • On January 26, the Columbia River Maritime Museum got a message that a fisherman found the miniboat FLAMES UNITE in the Philippines! 
  • This vessel was built by Columbia City Elementary in OR with partners Kanehama Elementary in Japan. It was launched in June of 2022, with its last report on February 7, 2023.
  • We are working to connect with locals for next steps. Stay tuned!
